I want to start our first lesson with the Social Media Mind Set that is imperative for doing business online. And if you are not adopting this mind set and implementing online social media strategies for your business now, you may not be doing much business within the next 5 years. I will go into statistics later but I must say if you’re in business the majority of your clients and customers are already online with social media. It time you were there to.
Most people believe that social media is for kids or people talking about useless things. Truth is you can certainly find plenty of kids and posts about dogs, babies and all the fuzzies. Social media is a great way for families and friends to stay in touch and connected but I want to focus more on how to use social media for business, growing and building a following and client base.
Have you ever been to one of those chamber of commerce networking events or parties? Do you ever notice that people look around the room, introduce themselves to a few new people and towards the end of the evening they gravitate to their particular crowd or group, where they feel comfortable and share the same or similar interest? Think of social media networking in the same way. The only difference is the audience is much larger, there is no closing time or time limit, you can float in and out of circles easily and you never have to leave home to do it.
Now the average person on Facebook has around 140 friends and some have many more. They have so many they create fan pages for the overload. This means your audience can rapidly grow and many people will see your post on others pages. You will want to find groups that interest you and as you share with the groups you will naturally meet others, make new friends and grow your following. Say you are a dentist and love boating and fishing and you live in Florida. Well this is the type of social media groups you can search for. As you share and become known in the group, others will visit your page and your friend list and likes will grow. When you share about yourself what you do and what you love it is very likely that another boating enthusiast may see you are a dentist or one of their friends. Next thing you know is you have another patient, all just because they liked your posts, comments, videos, blogs, somewhat know you or know someone who does and they need a dentist. There you are.
That is the Mindset for Social Media Success
There are many social media networks that will serve you greatly. Don’t try to get on all of them. The ones we recommend starting with are YouTube, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter. These are the largest and really the only ones I give a lot of attention to. I have joined others but prefer to focus on a few. You will find that is all you will need. Nice part is you can link them all together and cross share on each network. We will go into more detail on each of these later.
So I hope that you can see now the potential and power of social media. As you are keeping up with friends, family and business associates many other people are seeing you and who knows when they will need your service or product. You don’t have to sell on the social media networks as a matter of fact that will not work. It is for networking and making yourself and what you do available for those who are looking. Like I said, think of social media as a huge networking event that never ends and has unlimited new people coming through the door.
Now remember don’t try and sell on the social media networks. Trust me you don’t want to be that guy or gal at the networking event that shoves their card in everyone face trying to push their product or service. That’s the last person I want to buy from or do business with. Be friendly, keep conversation interesting and light and business will come to you automatically. Like any relationship, show genuine interest in others and if you are not interested in someone just move on because a new person just walked through the door.
